Mextasy Limited Edition Poster! "VILLA RIDES" AND YET ANOTHER EXERCISE IN THE HISTORY MEXICAN STEREOTYPES IN U.S. MASS CULTURE

"VILLA RIDES" AND YET ANOTHER EXERCISE IN THE HISTORY MEXICAN STEREOTYPES IN U.S. MASS CULTURE

An epic moment in the history of Mexican stereotypes fabrication--the type of film that puts the "bad" in "bad hombres." VILLA RIDES is an underwhelming western from Paramount featuring bald poster child Yul Brynner as Pancho Villa.

The reviews off of wikipedia are restrained AND on point:

Film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert, gave the film a mixed review, writing, "You would think an interesting picture could be made about Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution, a subject most Americans know next to nothing about. But we learn nothing except that Pancho was a romantic fellow who had a mustache and liked to have people lined up three in a row and killed with one bullet. (That scene, incidentally, got a big laugh.) Frankly, this kind of movie is beginning to get to me. You can enjoy one, maybe, or two. Or you can enjoy a particularly well done shoot-em-up. But the Loop has been filled with one action-adventure after another for the last month, and if Villa Rides is not the worst, it is certainly not the best."

Film critic A. H. Weiler wrote, "Yul Brynner, Robert Mitchum, cavalry, politicos and even the faint strains of "La Cucaracha" fail to disguise the fact that Villa Rides which dashed into the Forum Theater yesterday, is simply a sprawling Western and not history. As such it incessantly fills the screen with the din of pistols and rifles, and assorted warfare and wenching, shot in sharp color on rugged Spanish sites that strikingly simulate Mexico. Any resemblance to the 1912-1914 campaigns of the bandit-revolutionary in the cause of liberal President Madero and against General Huerta is purely coincidental."[4]

Mextasy Limited Edition Poster + My Initial Lesson in Semiotics -- THE BORDERTOWN DRIVE-IN, LAREDO, TEXAS (an excerpt from my dissertation, The Politics of Solitude: Alienation in the Literatures of the Americas)

THE BORDERTOWN DRIVE-IN LAREDO, TEXAS

11x17 print, full color on glossy archival stock, shipped, folded once, via media mail. signed and numbered.
The First Frame, Wherein the Semiotic Ineptitude of a Young Voyeur Leads to Misreading the Bull

It begins with this bull, the Bordertown bull. Waking up after nineteen years in a small South Texas bordertown--Laredo, Texas, USA, to be exact. Throughout my childhood I thought that the mural featured on the Bordertown Drive-In was of a giant mutant bull, terrorizing the countryside and being attacked by U.S. Air Force jets as a giant cowboy heatedly pursued from behind.

I was wrong, of course.

That is, I had read it wrong. The giant bull was merely a personal idiosyncratic creation, a misreading, owing to a mistake in perspective. Without the tools to understand the concept of perspective in an illustration, I had taken the mural at face value: giant drawing of bull = giant monster, mutant bull. That the animal was merely foregrounded and thus larger than its surroundings was, at the time, a concept as abstract as quantum mechanics or multilateral arms-control negotiations.

The painting was misread.

The mural in question faced out on the main strip leading out of and into Laredo and adorned the back side of a projection wall for the local drive-in called the Bordertown Twin Drive-In Theater. Some fifteen years ago, the Bordertown was a booming two-screen haven of movies, alcohol, and sexual abandon for auto aficionados, raucous families, and young adults on both sides of the Rio Grande River. But in the year 1988, that monument was slowly falling apart. No longer a haven for movie-goers, it was home to a flea market open on the weekends, where one could find various used articles, recycled furniture and a huge assortment of deserted, dated consumer artifacts that could have passed as trash in any dumpster. In the half-decade before the current period when the North American Free Trade Agreement and individuals associated with its passage were heralding the arrival of the New World Order, the Bordertown Drive-in was an icon for Laredo itself--a depressed market selling trash in various disguises as merchandise. But then again even trash is not trash in and of itself; trash is not a generic designation (trash for one may be treasure to another). Given the depleted economic resources of the city, even trash might be repackaged in some way so as serve a purpose or garnish a profit. Even the Drive-In had been repackaged as a pulga, as a flea market

But let us not allow the caress of nostalgia to blind us from the present for I must report that the Bordertown Drive-In/pulga is no more.

The Godzilla-esque bull has been erased from the space of Laredo--my photograph must proxy for the structure as a kind of ersatz visual relic.

The structure was torn town and sold to the Wal-Mart corporation. On the site of the giant cow arose the specter of what is known as Sam’s Warehouse--a discount marketer of groceries and other assorted sundries. Gross sales of Laredo’s Sam’s Warehouse and Wal-Mart were so huge that just before his death in 1992, Sam Walton flew to Laredo to celebrate his profits. Walton was visibly weak and ailing as he greeted cheering workers and shoppers like some latter-day vision of Cortez.

I would have included a picture of the store if I didn’t miss that old bull so much.

Textmex, Mextasy, Eyegiene, and Technosexualities on the Road in the Land of Blue Turf! Lecture/Signing/Exhibition at Boise State University, April 11 @ 7pm! "Orgasmic, Semiotic Cataclysms of Eyegiene and Mextasy: Digressions of Film Studies, Ethnic Studies, & Cultural Studies in the Televisual, Techno-Ontologicial Age of the Smartphone"

...a new poster for the MEXTASY gig @ Boise State just launched!

Friday, April 11, 2014 at 7pm, I will be in the Farnsworth Room in the Student Union Building on the campus of Boise State University for a lecture/exhibition fusing my past and more recent researches into the sprawling miasma Tex[t]-Mex, Mextasy, Eyegiene, and Technosexualities.  The improbable and ungainly title I have used to lasso together this hoarder's treasure trawl of cultural studies goodies is "Orgasmic, Semiotic Cataclysms of Eyegiene and Mextasy." As if that was not enough, I tacked on a subtitle for good measure: "Digressions of Film Studies, Ethnic Studies, & Cultural Studies in the Televisual, Techno-Ontologicial Age of the Smartphone."  Can't wait to see Ralph Clare, Professor, Boise State, and a former student of mine back in the day on Montezuma Mesa, read that title aloud!

In any event, I will be selling, signing (and drawing cartoons) into copies of Tex[t]-Mex: Seductive Hallucinations of the "Mexican" in America, and prints from the Mextasy show at the lecture--in you are a Latina/o-loving, cultural studies maven trapped in the wilds of Idaho, come on down!

The original poster appears below--the updated one with all the proper thankyous appears opposite--click to make more bigger or go here for a high-res version.

Mextasy Limited Edition Poster: I/EYE, EVA

I/EYE, EVA

Eva Longoria, Marionette?

Ethnic Mannequins Series 7: I/Eye, Eva

One of the most popular American stars in television in the late 20th and early 21st century, Eva Longoria re-embodies the form and allure of the Latina bombshell, born in the early days of Hollywood. Like some reincarnation of Rita Hayworth, Raquel Welch (not dead yet, thank you very much), or Dolores del Rio, Longoria's sultry satin/Latin allure tempts the eyes of spectators and Nielsen ratings mavens from coast to coast.

One of my more recent pieces of digital art, I/Eye, Eva picks up on the idea of the "ethnic mannequin" that I toyed around with in Tex[t]-Mex--there, in a mad synthesis of ideas lifted from Gayatri Spivak (the subject-effect), Jacques Derrida (the trace), Frantz Fanon (darkness and psychopathology), and Edmundo Desnoes ("Cuba Made Me So" | Latina/o objectification), I tried to document the dynamic processes wherein Latina/o archetypes transmogrify/evolve.
What's special about Eva (and what she has in common with Rita Hayworth), is that she is the head of her own production companies and businesses--not all too successful if wikipedia's resources are accurate (look up her Beso restaurant biz based out of Vegas--here's a Wall Street Journal piece).

This connection between the star (the "victim" in the familiar objectification of woman argument) and the semiotic means of production surrounding her (graphic) reproduction complicates things for the contemporary arbiter of Latina semiotic signage.

The piece above, crafted for the OSU show in Columbus, Ohio,  grafts together photography by Chilean camera wizard Nino Muñoz, in British lads' magazineArena's January 2007 issue, as well as work from the June 2009 issue of GQ Mexico (still looking for the photographer's identity). Two years apart, a 20th century ethnic mannequin stars in two photoshoots that feature images with ropes and chains, each image evoking unseen puppeteers of sorts.

Coincidence? I would have to ask Eva and am till waiting on a callback!

Note: purchasing this item means you will receive a version of the poster with the word "Mextasy" along the bottom pictured with this entry.  If you would like the original, plain, digital collage, also pictured here, just send an email to memo@sdsu.edu after you do your online order--I will be sure to ship you correct print, or better yet, for having endured this long note, I will send you BOTH!
